Conscientious Objection in Europe
The European Commission has launched today the Europe 2020 Strategy. The Commission identifies three key drivers for growth, to be implemented through concrete actions at EU and national levels: smart growth (fostering knowledge, innovation, education and digital society), sustainable growth (making our production more resource efficient while boosting our competitiveness) and inclusive growth (raising participation in the labour market, the acquisition of skills and the fight against poverty).
The strategy was criticised by some to be not ambitious enough.
The European Parliament approved the new line-up of the European Commission today at 9 February 2010 with 488 votes in favour, 137 against and with 72 abstentions.
The new team will be in charge during the legislative period until 2014.

Young people of three Balkan countries (MK, MN and RS) can for the first time freely experience Europe!
If Maja from Belgrade wants to visit an art exhibition in Budapest, if Dejan from Skopje wants to book a low-cost flight for his New Year’s visit to Berlin or if Milica from Podgorica wants to attend a youth camp in Sweden, they can all finally do it from the 19th of December 2009 onwards freely, without a long, expensive and uncertain procedure of applying for a Schengen visa.
The Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) welcome the UN Copenhagen talks on Climate Change, which were solemnly opened last week. Nonetheless, talks are not enough and JEF-Europe demands a bold, binding and long-term environmental deal because climate change is not only a global threat to human, economic and social rights but also risks to put at stake the stability of democratic regimes through conflict over scarce resources and mass migration.
